February 4, 2010
Dear Members,
Once again we had a fantastic showing for our meeting in January. We started 2010 with a great presentation by Attorney Adam Brand. Attorney Brand had a very informative session on TIPs, Thermal Intradiscal Procedures. He described how the manufacturer, providers, and attorneys are engaging insurance company’s with this procedure and how it is costing these companies tens of thousands of dollars.
February’s meeting will take place on February 12, 2010 at Kawloon’s Restaurant on Rt.1 North in Saugus. The members meeting with start at 10 am with the general meeting to start at 10:45 am which will be followed by a lunch for a $15.00 fee.
The general meeting will be given by our own board member, Michael Merolli and Attorney David Brink. They will be discussing Event Data Recorders (EDRs) which have been installed in vehicles in increasing numbers over the past 15 years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) passed ruling 49 CFR Part 563, which requires that all vehicles sold in the US which have EDR capability must make the data accessible to the public commencing with model year 2012.
Bosch makes a Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) tool which has been in use since 2004 in Law Enforcement Reconstructions and with the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Collision Analysis Team. The CDR tool can reveal crash severity, speed at impact, braking, seat belt use, steering angle. Michael has been successfully using the tool as part of a pilot program in the SIU at Commerce Insurance Company.
Attorney David Brink will be providing the legal advice. He researched applicable case law and helped form protocol, which is still in the development stage. Last month Attorney David Brink and Michael Merolli spoke at the CDR Summit in Houston Texas on the subject of Insurance Applications of the CDR System.
This presentation would be great for all of the appraisers to attend. The information that will be disseminated will be a great tool for the appraisers as they perform their duties. Pass this along to your appraisers and have them join us for this meeting.e
Sincerely,
David M. Potter
